Los Lacandones, is a series of photographs of the Lacandon-Mayans who live in a remote region in the Mexican state of Chiapas. This small group of indigenous people were living on the periphery of dramatic change when Hauser photographed them on three separate occasions in the early 1980’s. The Lacandon-Mayans call themselves “true people”. They retained their distinct culture late into the twentieth century, but much like native civilizations throughout the world, the Lacandons struggled to resist the influence of the dominant culture. The destruction of rain forest, their home, deeply and permanently altered their lives. This exhibit pays homage to their changing society.
Photographs hand-made with platinum metals are exceptionally beautiful; the depth, luminosity, and extensive tonal range, virtually unmatched by other printing processes. Platinum metals are gently brushed onto fine art paper to make a print; the result is a unique handcrafted image.
